A number of anatomical structures are packed into a tight space in the elbow, which, when combined with heavy and constant use of one’s arms in everyday life, make this joint especially prone to injury and disease. Diagnosis and therapy are often long, drawn-out processes and symptoms can cover a wide range. The cause can usually be traced to improper or excessive use of the joint, as is the case with tennis and golfer’s elbow.
This page provides a brief overview of commonly occurring problem areas; detailed information is available in our FACT SHEET:

The result can be intense, stabbing pains, particularly on the external portion of the elbow joint.
Treatment includes resting the joint and avoiding movements that trigger the pain; local pain relievers and elbow bandages can also bring relief, as can acupuncture and the whole range of physical therapy.
Golfer’s elbow is a condition in which the muscles that bend the wrist and fingers are chronically overtaxed. Pain results when an individual simultaneously flexes (bends) the hand joint while turning his or her forearm away from the body. Just as in tennis elbow, rest, pain relievers and elbow bandages are frequently the treatments of choice.
